As if those words went from his lips to God's ears, after seemingly going up for days, today, mostly, I went down, long steep downs, coasting 20 mph downs, and when it was not down, it was flat. A great ride! I expect to pay for this over the next couple of days of course. But it is OK, cause it was fun! What hurts most, as has been true from day one, is my derriere. Unfortunately Russ Renee had no derriere wisdom to pass along.
I'm convinced that while the rest of the United States was holding a "do not litter campaign", the folks along the first 30 miles of highway 70 out of Globe, AZ were holding a pro litter crusade: "Please, dump your trash along our highway" it must have read. I have never seen so much trash along an American roadway. All kinds, from thousands of cans and bottles to every conceivable type of plastic to household trash to car parts to tons of broken glass. Really sad. And really ugly. Fortunately it cleared up after awhile.
On one of my breaks it occurred to me that I have a great fondness for animals that eat house flies. Bats and lizards are my friend.
On another break, sitting on a concrete barrier as three, five, and fifty ton hunks of metal hurl past a few feet away, I got to thinking how unnatural it is not to jump aside. I had an image of someone, never exposed to traffic and I felt certain they would, wisely, run away in terror. And for good reason; a drunk, a texter, or someone on the phone and suddenly the steel, concrete, and me become one.
Photos from today:
The Indian owner of the motel I stayed at bowing toward the rising sun and saying her morning prays. |
The route I was supposed to take yesterday. |
This is the third flea market I saw this morning in about 15 miles. This must be a popular way to spend Saturday morning. |
I'm sorry this image is not better. It is a great shot if it were taken with a better camera. (I'm using my phone.) |
